The Lover’s Pizza on the Tollway was feeding so many customers from East Dallas that its owners decided to open a second location in Casa Linda Plaza. It’s the same great, inexpensive Italian food you find at the original restaurant, but with a few menu additions (hence the “grill” tagged onto its name). If you ask managers Giovanni and Benni what makes the food so tasty, they’ll tell you it’s “authentic Italian” — a quality that’s hard to dispute given their unmistakable accents. The cousins who run the Lover’s restaurants in Dallas call northern Italy home, and most of the recipes are “from our moms,” Giovanni says. The recipe for the homemade marinara sauce is a family secret, as is the recipe for the house Italian dressing — a creamy tomato concoction with plenty of fresh garlic. Forget the usual balsamic vinegar base. “That’s fast Italian,” Giovanni says. “This is good Italian.” The other reason their food tastes so good is that it’s made daily from scratch. One bite of the goat cheese pizza with sun-dried tomatoes, grilled chicken, spinach and goat cheese will convince you of this.
