New Greenville restaurant goes bold with Asian food

Nandina, the new restaurant in Liberty Noodle’s former spot off Lower Greenville, is nothing if not adventurous.

The menu explores Japanese and Thai food in tapas-size portions. There are cold tapas, hot tapas, grilled tapas, Thai standards such as Pad Thai, and a traditional if limited (especially as rolls are concerned) sushi menu.

But Nandina’s owners are not only adventuresome where food is concerned; they also know how to make diners feel comfortable. The inside of the newly renovated restaurant is gorgeous, with three separate dining areas, including one atrium-like room that offers views of a redwood patio. A contemporary wood staircase leads to a pretty upstairs dining area that can be used for private parties.

A sushi bar and traditional bar skirt either edge of the main dining area, giving the whole place a very organized, feng shui feel, allowing patrons to feel relaxed and able to enjoy their food.

And back to the food, the menu is enterprising, filled with items that inspire both taste buds and a go-ahead-I-dare-you kind of bravado. Miso-marinated salmon and pork and shrimp dumplings with mushroom soy sauce sound delicious, while sake-steamed clams probably aren’t for the food-shy.

Even meat and potatoes get a dose of creativity at Nandina. Shown here is the signature Nandina beef strip loins served with a citrus pepper sauce, perched atop a bed of vibrant green mashed potatoes that taste like, well, mashed potatoes.
