Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived around 11 a.m. Saturday to conduct a welfare check at the motel along East R.L. Thornton Freeway near Dolphin Road, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The firefighters tried to enter the room but couldn’t. When they heard a gunshot, they called the police. No other people were thought to be in the room.

SWAT personnel negotiated with the man for five hours. They lost contact with him, and when they entered the room, they found him dead.

The police didn’t say what led to the request for a welfare check, and the person involved has not been identified, according to the Morning News.
