Another mom-and-pop shop bites the dust. Stoney’s Fines Wines and Market, which started 11 years ago on Harry Hines and moved to Greenville Avenue next to The Grape in 2005, will close its doors at the end of February "due to more reasons than we want to go into," stated a recent email from owners Stoney and Diana Savage.

We profiled the shop in a March 2007 cover story on neighborhood businesses and their struggle to stay afloat. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last of mom-and-pop businesses to shut down in this economy, as publisher Rick Wamre warns in this month’s column.

Between now and Feb. 28, Stoney’s will be holding a going out of business sale with wine and liquor 30 percent off, gifts at wholesale prices or less, and even much of the stores display furniture being sold.
