Friday is the opening day of the State Fair of Texas. Though Woodrow Wilson’s own “Deep Fried Jesus” is not in the running this year, there will be plenty of fried goodness, including deep friend chicken noodle soup on a stick and deep fried Froot Loops. Single day admission ranges from $12.50 to $16.50.

Thursday night, head to the Lakewood Penne Pommodoro to support the Woodrow Wilson High School band, where 15 percent of all dine-in purchases after 4 p.m. will benefit student musicians.

Saturday night at 7 p.m., head to Lakewood United Methodist Church for a free Salaam Supper in support of Refugee Services of Texas. Salaam Supper helps to raise awareness about refugees and allow guests to learn how to welcome them here in Dallas. RSVP by calling 469.235.8747 or e-mailing office@mylakewoodchurch.org.

Saturday morning 10 a.m, bring your pets to Bethany Christian Church to be blessed at a Pet Blessing Service. There will also be photo opportunities for attendees as well.

Saturday at 11 a.m. the Granada Theater will be hosting celebrity Chef John Tesar for afternoon cooking and cocktails. Cesar will be teaching attendees how to cook his favorite dishes, and will share them with the crowd. Tickets also include signature cocktails, and cost $75.

Texas’ National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime block party is on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Lower Greenville and Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Associations are cohosting one of the largest National Nights Out at Tietze Park. Food, games, and information about health and safety will all be available.  Vickery Place will be hosting its event from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at 2600 Glencoe Ave, and will include food, music, local artisans and information tables. The Greenland Hills celebration will be at 5500 Morningside Ave and begins at 6 p.m. There will be a firetruck, YMCA games, a DJ and food.  NNO provides opportunities for neighbors to get to know each other, area businesses and local police.

Half-Price Books will be hosting retired detective and star of the documentary series “Homicide Hunter,” Detective Lt. Joe Kenda on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Kenda will discuss and sign copies of his true crime book “I Will Find You: Solving Killer Cases from My Life Fighting Crime,” which will be available for purchase.

Internationally renowned hula hoop group Chula Hoop USA will be performing at the Dallas Arboretum this Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.,1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Terrace at the Camp House. This Oktoberfest-themed performance will be followed by a hand’s on hula hoop class. The activity is free with the price of admission.

A Tasteful Place, the Arboretum’s new edible display garden, opens on Oct. 3. The new space overlooks the lake and downtown and includes several gardens that will be used in the cooking classes and demonstrations that will take place in the new pavilion, which can be used for private events as well. The space is designed to highlight the view, and includes new trails, orchards and a lagoon.
