Local dessert shop Society Bakery is planning a move from its location after 20 years on Greenville Avenue.
The bakery will open in Lakewood at the Skillman Live Oak Center in September, owner Roshi Muns said, though the timeline depends on construction. The lease at the current location at 3610 Greenville Ave. is up at the end of the year.
Muns and business partner Emily Cassady started Society Bakery 20 years ago, starting in a space by The Corner Market on Greenville Avenue and McCommas Boulevard. Years later, they moved the shop north to its current location.
All of the bakery business will be the same, Muns said, but the larger space at 1926 Skillman St. will allow Society Bakery to expand its English-inspired afternoon tea service. The team room will serve afternoon tea and mahjong tea, where guests can learn to play mahjong while enjoying tea, coffee and champagne, along with food items including sandwiches and homemade scones with clotted cream.
It will also have two party rooms, one for kids, and one for adults; the bakery has only been able to accommodate a few parties over the years, Muns said. Another item being ticked off the wish list is a second door.
City records show the last business to fill the bakery’s future space on Skillman was Excellence Emergency Room.
Society Bakery will close over the summer while construction is ongoing. But when the new location opens, just 1.9 miles from its current space, customers can expect to find Italian cream cake, funfetti cake, Brooklyn blackout cake, frosted cupcakes, petit fours, brownies, bars and cookies.
The bakery has gained national attention over the years, appearing on Food Network and being recognized by Ellen Degeneres as having one of the top 10 cupcakes in America.
