Ted Davey, the owner of Lakewood’s Balcony Club, passed away Friday. He was 54. He fought abdominal cancer for more than a decade, and was in hospice care for the last two weeks of his life.
Davey was an actor and singer whose career ranged from edgy performances at the Undermain Theater in Deep Ellum to Las Vegas clubs. Katherine Owens, the co-founder of the Undermain told KERA that Davey was “a classic character actor, the most important kind of actor a theater can have. And then we heard him sing. My God, that voice. It was unbelievable, like he could sing anything and make it sound gorgeous.”
After performing at a number of North Texas theaters, he moved to Las Vegas in the 1990s and transformed himself into lounge singer. He later purchased the Balcony Club in 2013, reviving the East Dallas staple and creating a space for local jazz acts to perform, with live music every night.
A gathering for Davey will be held at the Undermain Theater, Jan. 7, 1-3 p.m. Memorial donations can be sent to Texas Oncology Foundation for the Sammons Center in Davey’s memory.
Victor Tango’s, the Henderson Avenue cocktail and small plate favorite will serve its last meal on New Year’s Eve. Opening in 2008, it is credited with bringing the mixology movement to Dallas, adding intrigue to the cocktail scene in the metroplex.
Tristan Simon opened Victor Tango’s along with Henderson’s Hibiscus, which also closed since Simon sold the concepts to Joule Hotel owner Tim Headington in 2014. Victor Tango’s joins Sissy’s and Mellow Mushroom, which closed their doors on the strip in 2017.
