School starting so early? That never would have been considered in the pre-air-conditioning days prior to the early 1970s.

Of course, our schools were built like caves with better circulation (a mixed blessing during “duck and cover” nuclear bomb drills), but that droning fan in the classroom after lunch only induced sleep.

With the start of school comes the start of football. Those of us who are pining for pigskin, but peeved about last season, are about to receive our annual football fix.

The Wildcats, led by new head coach Robert Blackshear, return 17 letterman, including standouts Sean Campbell, Merritt Drury, Sean Morrison and John Pedigo.

The team lost Ward Richmond, who has gone on to Brown University. Other Wildcats who have played Ivy League football during the past few years include Colin Corgan for Dartmouth, Bill Hiser for Princeton, and Merritt’s older brother, Eric, “for God, for country and for Yale.”

Ward also will be missed on the Woodrow stage, where he starred in the musicals.

After an Aug. 30 scrimmage against St. Mark’s, the Wildcats will play the following schedule:

• Sept. 6, against Quinlan at Quinlan, 7:30 p.m.
• Sept. 14, against Rowlett at Forester, 7:30 p.m.
• Sept. 20, against Ennis at Ennis, 7:30 p.m.
• Sept. 27, against Spruce at Forester, 7:30 p.m.
• Oct. 4, against Seagoville at Seagoville, 7:30 p.m.
• Oct. 11, against Adamson at Pleasant Grove, 7:30 p.m.
• Oct. 19, against Smith at Forester, 2 p.m.
• Oct. 26, against Samuel at Forester, 2 p.m.
