It’s time for new telephone books and the City has a plan for your old White Pages.

Southwestern Bell contracted with United Paper to recycle our old phone books. And the City has coordinated with Tom Thumb to furnish drop-off sites for the books. Delivery of the recyclables to United Paper is provided by Community Waste Disposal and Laidlaw Waste Systems.

Last year, 300 tons were recycled. The goal for Project Redirectory 1994 is 500 tons. If it is successful, the program will be repeated in October, when the Yellow Pages are delivered.

The drop-off sites will be open until June 30 at these neighborhood Tom Thumbs: 6333 E. Mockingbird at Abrams, 8698 Skillman at Audelia, 6770 Abrams at Skillman, 11215 Garland Road at Jupiter, 9310 Forest at Abrams, and 3222 N. Buckner At John West.

The City’s transfer stations also accept phone books: Fair Oaks Transfer Station, 7677 Fair Oaks, 670-6126; Bachman Transfer Station (Dry Gulch), 9500 Harry Hines, 670-6150; Oak Cliff Transfer Station, 4610 S. Westmoreland, 670-1927; and McCommas Landfill, 5100 Youngblood, 670-0977.

The Fair Oaks Transfer Station is the closest to our neighborhood. Items are accepted Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can also drop off grass clippings, leaves and brush; the sites include a bin for newspapers and igloos for glass and aluminum.

For more information aobut Project Redirectory, contact the City at 670-4475 or Southwestern Bell at 1-800-443-6200.

The City is planning a county-wide “household hazards” recycling day. Items accepted will include paint, paint thinner, fertilizers, pesticides, car batteries and oil.

We need to support the City’s programs, so plan to recycle your phone books before June 30. We should be able to recycle our household hazardous waste in a few months.
