Businesses roughly between Vickery and Bryan streets would be required to get a special use permit to stay open past midnight under a proposal from City Council members Angela Hunt and Pauline Medrano.
A community meeting about the proposal last week drew about 100 people. Many homeowners in the area like the proposal, which aims to stymie crime in the area. Police say most violent crimes in the area, where at least two people have been killed since May, happen after midnight.
But opponents say applying for a special use permit, which would cost $1,100 a year, isn’t fair to businesses on lowest Greenville, which are competing with businesses a few blocks away, where permits wouldn’t be required.
