We are quite sure this is a non-alcoholic Slushie in the hand of longtime DISD teacher John McCollum. If not, what the heck? He's retiring.

2009-2010 Teacher of the Year John McCollum will retire from Bryan Adams High School following more than 30 years as a DISD educator. McCollum, known to his students as “Mac” also talked to the Advocate in ’09 about the ongoing changes at the sometimes-troubled Bryan Adams.

McCollum jokes that, no matter what, he “bleeds Kelly green” and his drama students (and there are decades’ worth of them still hanging around East Dallas) remember him fondly.

“He inspired us to step beyond ourselves and think outside the confines of our petty high school existence. At least half of the memories I cherish from Bryan Adams are a result of my involvement with theater and the influence of Mac,” 1993 graduate Quentin Mendoza says.

Mac’s friends and former students will hold a retirement party Sunday, May 29 from 6:30-10 p.m at Bryan Street Tavern. The East Dallas based band Home By Hovercraft, which includes at least one BA grad, will perform.
