The long-awaited pedestrian bridge that will allow safe crossing from the Katy Trail to East Dallas’ Ridgewood Trail is inching toward completion. If all goes as planned, it’ll be open for runners and cyclists by Oct. 1, hopefully.
“No one but God knows that date,” Councilman Philip Kingston joked when asked when the bridge would open.
He’s been championing the project launched by his predecessor Angela Hunt (now an Advocate columnist) and was first projected for completion in 2011. Clearly that didn’t happen.
According to CBS, delays in finishing the pedestrian bridge led to two deaths and 15 injuries from run-ins with drivers.
“I barely have words to express how sad and angry I am about the slow pace of this project,” Kingston posted to social media.
He says the delays were politically motivated. “I think that an important infrastructure project, one of most important in my district and one that was fully funded, was held up because of petty personal politics. And I am absolutely making that allegation,” he told CBS.
