Sumo Shack will open on SMU Boulevard, off of Greenville, on May 4, 2017.

With its warm bowls of late-night comfort food, Wabi House quickly became a neighborhood favorite after it debuted on Lowest GreenvilleĀ in 2015. Now, the same culinary mind will open a new joint on the edge of our neighborhood that will beĀ a little more funky but just as original when it comes to unusual flavor profiles.

The Tokyo Dog at Sumo Shack.

Chef Dien Nguyen is going for the college crowd with Sumo Shack, opening just off Greenville at 5629 SMU Blvd. on Star Wars Day (that’s May the 4th, in case you don’t have a geek in your life). The menu includes traditional favorites with a Japanese twist, like a hot dog topped withĀ bonito flakes, nori, scallion, sesame seeds, spicy ketchup and kewpie mayo; or french fries with miso chili, queso, onion, pickle jalapeno, nori and scallion. But the business will specialize in bao, a type of steamed bun filled with all sorts of delicious. You can even find ramen at Sumo Shack if the line is too long at Wabi House, and unlike Wabi House, it can be ordered to go. Nothing on the 20-item menu will cost more than $10.Ā

TheĀ restaurant willĀ host a soft opening on Friday and Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., before moving to its normal businessĀ on Sunday, May 6. Like Wabi House, it’ll then be open late, until 4 a.m., on Friday and Saturdays (till 10 p.m. every other night).
