Okrapalooza is Dallas’ one and only okra cook-off competition. The event benefits Promise of Peace Community Gardens, where local celebrity chefs compete  in a two hour cooking and tasting event, open to the public. Okrapalooza will be Sunday, September 17, at 11 a.m. at The Lot. Tickets are $50, and include food and live music.

Heart of the Neighborhood: A Celebration of Community is a multiple-vendor event this Saturday at 10 a.m. at The Mix, a creative co-working space at 9125 Diceman Drive. In attendance will be the pre-teen entrepreneur bakers from E&J’s Backyard Bakery.

The Texas Special Olympics Kayak Race is this Sunday, from 8 a.m. to noon at the White Rock Boathouse, 2810 White Rock Road. The day will include series of races between the athletes with intellectual disabilities. Come out and support the athletes, and if you would like to volunteer for the event, click here.

The June Leftwich Book Sale will take place this Saturday at the Lakewood Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will continue Sept. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the library, the sale includes a selection of books and media. Bring cash or your checkbook, credit cards aren’t accepted.

Art and aging author and folklorist Jon Kay, Ph.D. will be at The Point at C. C. Young on Friday at 10 a.m. to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of The Point. The Indiana University professor will lead a presentation followed by a questions and a book signing. “Life-Story Art and Aging: Material Life Review in Everyday Life” will be about life-story projects and how they support the physical, mental and social well-being of senior adults. This event is free.

The Cool Thursdays Concerts at the Dallas Arboretum, will continue this Thursday at 7 p.m., with Kraig Parker, A Tribute to Elvis Presley. Enjoy the sunset over the lake and bring a picnic and beverages. Food trucks from Shake Shack, Easy Sliders and Bellatrino will also be there.

The Bill Ellison Memorial Concert and Silent Auction will be Wednesday at 7 p.m at the Granada Theater. Proceeds will go to the long-time Granada Theater music photographer’s funeral costs and medical bills. Musical performers will include Andy Timmons, Straight Tequila Night, Paul Averitt, Rocky Athas and other special guests. Tickets are $12.50.

Join Juliette Fowler Communities and Lakewood Conservatory of Fine Arts are coming together for a pop in art class. Art 4 the Ages is this Thursday at 10 a.m., and allows children ages 2-4 to interact with Lakewood’s senior residents to create art and be lead by a teacher from Lakewood Conservatory of Fine Arts. The cost is $10 per child.

If you like hearing from your favorite authors, this is the week for you. Half-Priced Books on Northwest Highway has a slew of speakers slated to appear this week to showcase their work, answer questions and sign books.

  • On Thursday at 7 p.m., hear health expert Dr. Partha Nandi will share his new book “Ask Dr. Nandi: 5 Steps to Becoming Your Own Health Hero.”
  • On Saturday at 3 p.m., New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu will discuss and sign copies of her sci-fi thriller, “Warcross.”
  • On Sunday at 1 p.m., Kevin C. Neece, the man behind “The Gospel According to Star Trek: The Original Crew,” will sign books until 3 p.m.
  • Also on Sunday at 1 p.m., the pair behind “The Last Train Out,” Rudy and Kay Seamayer, will share their book, the story of Rudy’s escape from WWII and immigration to America.
