This week’s book sale at the Lakewood Library is named for a woman you may not know, but from whom you have undoubtedly benefitted. Sept. 16 is the Lakewood Library Friends’ June Leftwich Book Sale, and Leftwich has definitely earned the naming rights.
Leftwich, a Lakewood resident whose maiden named is, fittingly, Storey, is a long-time advocate who worked for the Dallas Public Library in various roles starting in 1974. She was the circulation supervisor and volunteer coordinator, where she oversaw many used book sales that raised thousands of dollars for the library.
When she retired from the library, she somehow became busier. She served on the Municipal Library board, was president of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, and a member of the Lakewood Library Friends board.
In 2004, the Lakewood Library began a book sale of their own, Leftwich’s experience was an important part of its execution. “The gargantuan task was made manageable by the organization template developed by June back when she ran the huge Dallas Public Library book sale in downtown Dallas,” says Christina Worden, another Friend of the Lakewood Library.
The Lakewood Library Friends have named the book sale to honor Leftwich, “for her many accomplishments, for her loving and vivacious personality, for her support of the Dallas Public Library and for the Lakewood branch,” wrote Worden.
The June Leftwich Book Sale will take place this Saturday at the Lakewood Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will continue Sept. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the library, the sale includes a selection of books and media. Bring cash or your checkbook, credit cards aren’t accepted.
