The grand opening falls on owner Carol Nguyen’s birthday and coincides with Vietnam’s Mother’s Day celebration, also known as the Vu Lan festival.

Ngon is named after Nguyen’s mother, and the restaurant’s opening is a way to show her love, respect and appreciation. All mothers will be honored on the opening day with red and white roses. In Vietnam, red roses symbolize living mothers, and white roses symbolize those who have died.

Other opening events include a lion dance at 5 p.m. and a drawing for prizes throughout the day. On Sept. 10, Ngon will partner with woman-owned business Bar and Garden for a wine tasting.

All week, a portion of sales will benefit the nonprofit Mosaic Family Services.

The food is inspired by Nguyen’s favorite street vendors in Vietnam, and Ngon will serves traditional Vietnamese dishes like banh mi and bo hue. The restaurant incorporates black-and-white photographs of Nguyen’s hometown, Ha Noi, and plenty of plants and orchids, which are typically seen at businesses in Vietnam.

Ngon is open from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and noon to 9 p.m. Friday-Saturday at 1907 Greenville Ave.
