People

Neighborhood resident Steve Kenny has accepted a job working as an editor on the metropolitan desk of The New York Times. For most of his career, Kenny has been a reporter and editor at The Dallas Morning News since graduating from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He was most recently assistant editor of the Morning News’ free weekday publication, Quick!, which Kenny helped develop several years ago.

Neighborhood resident Ted Anderson has been elected to the board of directors of The Friends of Fair Park. The Friends of Fair Park’s mission is to promote year-round use of Fair Park, support Fair Park museums and their programs, and encourage planning for Fair Park’s future, including historic preservation of buildings, art, sculpture and related artifacts of the 1936 Texas Centennial. Anderson is managing partner of Kilgore & Kilgore.

Bishop Lynch High School recently recognized Lakewood resident Robert McClendon by awarding him its “Work of Heart” Award. McClendon, a member of the school’s maintenance department, was honored for his dedication and presented with $500 and a certificate. The award is anonymously funded through the Catholic Foundation to recognize teachers, administrators and staff of schools in the Diocese of Dallas.

Veletta Forsythe Lill has been elected as an honorary member of the Texas Society of Architects/AIA. She was recognized for leadership, commitment to community planning initiatives, neighborhood revitalization programs and conservation districts throughout Dallas. Lill is a neighborhood resident and former East Dallas councilwoman.

Students

Congressman Jeb Hensarling announced the nomination of five students from the Fifth Congressional District to attend ’s military service academies. Among those is Bryan Adams High School senior John Claude Goodson, who is nominated to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. Candidates interested in attending a military service academy must undergo a rigorous selection process and be nominated by a member of Congress, the vice president or by the department of Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps. Selections are based upon academic performance, college entrance test scores, physical aptitude, medical certification, extracurricular activities and leadership potential.

Several Woodrow Wilson High School football team members received 13-4A All-District honors. Those named are quarterback Kevin Rusk, senior; offensive linemen Jordan Pleasants and Preston Richmond, seniors; linebackers Truvonsio Warren and Damien Washington, juniors, and defensive back Sam Ashbrook, senior. Other honors went to wide receiver/defensive back Greg McCoy, senior, MVP; running back Brandon Dora, senior, offensive MVP; line backer/defensive end Jack Hlavaty, senior, defensive MVP; and Bobby Estes, coach of the year.

Volunteers

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Senior Source is looking for volunteers age 55+ to volunteer with more than 230 non-profit agencies in Dallas and Collin counties. The Child Abuse Prevention Center needs volunteers to work with children of divorcing parents one Saturday morning a month during its Families First seminars. The CAP Center also has openings for volunteers in the Parent Aide Program. Volunteers work in the home with parents and families at risk for child abuse and neglect.
