Dallas Water Utilities is reminding residents that time-of-day watering restrictions have resumed. These mandatory restrictions prohibit the watering of landscaping from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. April 1 through October 31. Failing to follow the conservation ordinance guidelines could result in possible fines of $250 to $2,000 per incident.

Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas is offering a week-long summer singing camp for students entering fourth- through eighth-grade. No audition is necessary to attend the camp. Lakewood Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) need Lakewood residents to join the program. While on patrol, volunteers observe and report any suspicious behavior to the Dallas Police. Tom Pauken of Lakewood recently was appointed chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission by Governor Rick Perry. The commission oversees and provides workforce development services to employers and job seekers throughout the state. Pauken is founder and president of TWP Inc. He formerly served in the White House Counsel Office under President Reagan and was subsequently appointed by the president to serve as director of ACTION, an independent federal agency. At ACTION, Pauken founded the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program and helped lead the implementation of First Lady Nancy Reagan’s Just Say No to Drugs campaign. He is a board member of TOR Minerals International Inc. and FutureMatrix Interventional. Pauken is also a member of the State Bar of Texas, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus.

District 9 Councilman Sheffie Kadane, along with several other council members, met last month with Congressman Jeb Hensarling in his Washington, D.C., office. They discussed issues important to the Dallas community, including the Trinity River project and the city’s proposed use of the James Muchert Army Reserve Center in Lake Highlands, which is scheduled to be closed as part of the latest round of base closings.

Nineteen Lakehill Preparatory students competed in the TAAPS 3A District Art Competition in which more than 200 works of art were judged in a variety of categories. Alan Cox took first place in the sculpture category and fifth in the pottery division. Sasha Moiger received honorable mention in the sculpture category. Alisyn Schreiber, Mechelle Gunn and Scott Garnsey placed first, second and fifth, respectively, in the printmaking division. Aaqila Rasheed and Rachal Mozelewski placed second and sixth in the ink drawing category. Emily Seeds took first place in the fashion accessories category. Harrison Boyd, Jessica McCorquodale, Brennan Tapp and Kaitlin Janning placed third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the painting division, which included more than 40 entrants. State finalists include Cox, Schreiber, Gunn, Seeds, Rasheed Boyd and McCorquodale.

The Lakewood Elementary math and science teams recently closed its TMSCA season in style at Cross Timbers Middle School. The math team took second place in the general math competition, and the math and science teams placed third in the overall competition.
