LAKEWOOD LIBRARY FRIENDS will benefit from Whole Foods Market purchases on Tuesday, Sept. 14.  Five percent of net sales that day at the Gaston and Abrams grocery store will help fund library books and programs.

THE LA LECHE LEAGUE will host its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Greenland Hills United Methodist Church, 5835 Penrose. The nonprofit organization provides education and support for women who want to breastfeed. For more details call 214.342.2355.

MAGUIRE ACADEMY OF IRISH DANCE will have several classes for beginners and adults this month, and the first class is free for new students. WOODROW WILSON HIGH SCHOOL has entered the Kohl’s Cares contest for a chance to win $500,000 for the school, led by teacher Michael Moran. You can still vote for Woodrow up to 20 times through Sept. 3 at facebook.com/kohls.

WOODROW WILSON HIGH SCHOOL SALUTATORIAN RYDER BILLINGS received the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers tuition, board and other college expenses. Billings is among 1,000 minority students selected for the scholarship. Funded by Bill and Melinda Gates, the scholarships are awarded through the United Negro College Fund to “outstanding, low-income African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific islander American and Hispanic American students.” Billings will attend Yale University, majoring in chemical engineering.

WOODROW WILSON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CYNTHIA CRUZ was one of 11 DISD students who traveled to Washington, DC this summer for the week-long Texas Leadership Forum, hosted by  U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions. The students attended meetings at the White House and the Pentagon, learning the inner working of U.S. government.
