Steve Lucas with The Sweethearts drill team: By Russell Kelemen

As he has done the past few years, Lakewood resident and Woodrow alum Steve Lucas will compete in the Ultra Centric 24-hour race to raise funds for the Woodrow Wilson High School organizations. In years past he has raised money for the band; last year and this year, it goes to the drill team, The Sweethearts.

“It helped me during the race to know each mile would help out Woodrow,” Lucas told us last year, after he put in more than 80 miles in the 48-hour version of the same event. People pledged cents or dollars for every mile he walked, raising a total of about $700. “You’re out there and you can get down sometimes. You’ve got to have something to keep you going,” he added.

Lucas, who graduated in 1979 and whose daughter attended Woodrow, began race walking in 2007 to lose weight and to combat diabetes. He’s logged thousands of miles since.

Woodrow’s Sweethearts are taking donations/pledges for each mile Lucas completes in the 24-hour race, held in Grapevine Nov. 23-24. Make pledges or donations to Karen Scherger at kscherger@sbcglobal.net.

“I hope to complete at least 40 miles and my record for the 24 hr race is 59.3 miles,” Lucas says.
