The area’s biggest National Night Out event is set for 5:30-8 p.m. at Tietze Park, 2700 Skillman. A joint effort of the Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association, Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association, Lowest Greenville West Neighborhood Association and The Friends of Tietze Park, the event is part education and part community celebration. The theme will be “Back the Blue,” and local officers will be on hand with city officials to discuss crime issues facing the neighborhood. Area nonprofits and businesses will also have informational booths. On the fun side, there will be live music, food, and face-painting and a bounce house for kiddos. There is no charge to attend, and all in the neighborhood are welcome.

The Vickery Place Neighborhood Association is turning its 25th annual event into a full block party in the 2600 block of Glencoe, between Miller and Willis. From 6:30-8:30 p.m., you can sip Lakewood Brewing Co. beers, sample treats from local eateries and take in the tunes of Salim Nourallah and Treefort 5 Band. The night also include informational booths from local schools and a raffle table, where tickets will be sold for $1. Admission is free, but cash is needed for food and drink purchases.

Established in 1984, the nationwide event offers crime prevention and safety tips, and promotes building relationships between community members and first responders. Most states hold the event on Aug. 1, but the Texas heat forces organizers statewide to postpone the event until the first Tuesday of October.
