Hosts Needed for Up With People Singing Troupe
Up With People, a singing and dancing group comprised of young people from around the world, will visit Woodrow Wilson High School Feb. 19 for a two-hour show at 7:30 p.m.
The non-profit, non-religious, non-political group of 130 people, age 18 to 26, perform its song and dance routines throughout the world, according to local organizer Todd Calvin. The group hopes to build understanding among nations and to equip young people with leadership qualities, Calvin says.

The show is being sponsored by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and the East Dallas/Lakewood Advocate.
Woodrow’s Variations Choir Plan Gala Performance
Woodrow Wilson High School’s award-winning show choir, the Variations, will hold a gala performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Southern Methodist University’s Caruth Auditorium.
Tickets are $15 and may be purchased from Dr. and Mrs. Ellwood Jones (821-4025). Make checks payable to Woodrow Wilson Variations. Proceeds will defray travel expenses for a planned May performance at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
Winners of Division 1 (highest) rating at the State UIL contest last summer, the Variations have performed at the Republican National Convention and the Young Americans contest in Los Angeles.
Northeast Division Solicits Funds for Police Bicycle Patrol
The Northeast Division of the Dallas Police Department and the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce have launched a fundraising drive to raise $2,000 for a new White Rock Lake bike patrol, says deputy chief John Chappelle.
Funds raised will be used to purchase bicycles for two White Rock Park rangers, Chappelle says, allowing the rangers increased accessibility to hard-to-reach areas.
The rangers will patrol on bicycle five to seven days weekly during daylight hours, Chappelle says, while retaining the option to utilize patrol cars as part of the enforcement effort.
“We don’t have a crime problem on the trail, but the potential is there,” Chappelle says. “We are trying to answer the potential so as to avoid any problems.”
Bicycle patrols in East Dallas, Downtown and the West End have been effective crime deterrents, says chamber president Judy Summers.

Bryan Adams Drama Group to Stage Harvey 3-Act Play
The Bryan Adams High School Drama Department will present the three-act play, Harvey, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23-24 in the high school auditorium.
The play, written by Mary Chase and made famous by actor Jimmy Stewart’s starring role, is about a man and his imaginary rabbit friend.
Director Rebecca Stephens says the public is welcome; general admission tickets are $3, reserved seating is $5. Call 319-0172 for more information.
Children’s Reading Program Planned at Lakewood Library
The Lakewood Library sponsors its second annual Winter Read Around Jan. 13 to March 28. Participating children will read a book from categories such as mystery, science fiction, history and fantasy.
Children’s librarian Marilyn Miller says approximately 50 children participated in the program last year. Participants will receive a Read Around button, and children who complete the program will receive a certificate for purchase of a paperback book from Waldenbooks.
The program is free and open to all area children. Registration begins Jan. 13.
East Dallas Chamber Elects New Officers
New officers for the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce have been elected, says Judy Summers, president of the chamber.
Among those selected are chairman Bill Cook, Baylor Health Care Systems; secretary Sue Dorsey, Swiss Avenue Bank; treasurer J.J. Lowe, certified public accountant; and legal counsel Suzanne Cochran, Cochran and Cochran, Attorneys.

LEE PTA PRESIDENT ATTENDS STATE MEETING: Robert E. Lee Elementary School PTA president Phyllis Unger attended the recent 82nd Annual Texas PTA Convention in Dallas. Unger was one of the delegates from 18 Texas PTA districts convening at the Loews Anatole Hotel. Dallas Independent School District superintendent Dr. Marvin Edwards spoke at the event, which also featured other speakers and workshops.
KIWANIS CLUBS DONATE FUNDS: The Kiwanis Clubs of Greater Dallas presented a check for $3,150 to Polly Miller of the Family Gateway group during a recent Lakewood Kiwanis Club meeting. The Downtown shelter offers dormitory-style housing for 30 families and recently acquired a 25-unit apartment complex in East Dallas, where families can live for up to one-year while seeking employment. The money was collected from jars placed in businesses throughout the City.
