A reliable source tells us that popular Mexican restaurant Meso Maya is coming to the southwest corner of Mockingbird-Abrams, replacing a dental office and a laundromat. A spokeswoman for Firebird Restaurant Group, the owner and creator of Meso Maya, won’t confirm this news, saying only, “We have not made a formal announcement about that.”

Meso Maya has two current locations, one downtown near the Perot museum, in between sister concepts El Fenix and Taqueria La Ventana, and one at Preston-Forest in the northwest corner’s strip center. The concept began there four years ago.

Mike Karns, president and CEO of Firebird Restaurant Group, bought the Dallas Tex-Mex brand El Fenix in 2008. Meso Maya spun off with a focus on regional Mexican food. Karns also is the new owner of Snuffer’s restaurants.

Owners of the 4,600-square-foot space in Mockingbird Abrams Shopping Center where Meso Maya is expected to open have told us that the space will become a restaurant but declined to specify which one, saying the company wanted to roll out the news on its own timeline. The shopping center owners also expanded Joann’s and added a Jos. A. Bank in recent years.
