A rainy gloomy day like today calls for a feel-good story — and I have one. It’s true and it all started right here at the Advocate offices a couple weeks ago. It’s about our official new Advocate mascot, Toby.

Advocate staffers found Toby, an apparently orphaned scraggly young mutt who had likely been hit by a car, limping around the parking lot one morning. Several of them took turns watching over the poor pup while they waited a couple hours for SPCA workers to arrive and get the injured animal to a veterinary hospital. They checked the listings in the Advocate magazine, by the way, to find the SPCA emergency line.

(I admit I wasn’t a part of this rescue mission as I was obliviously upstairs probably pecking away at my computer or some nonsense— I learned about it all later.)

While waiting for the SPCA, I suppose, our staffers grew pretty fond of the dog. Over the next few days, staff photographer Can Turkyilmaz (known as “Turk”) kept tabs on the canine’s condition: the injuries weren’t threatening, but he had a pretty bad case of heartworm. Turk talked it over with his wife and little daughters and decided to adopt the dog, now named Toby. Turk says it took two painstaking baths to get all the grime off the little guy, and he’s just finished the first round of heartworm treatment.
