Mary Kubin thought she and her daughter-in-law were making a special trip to the State Farm office to pick up a new 2021 calendar. Her daughter-in-law had other plans. When they arrived, they were greeted with balloons and cake to celebrate Mary’s 100th birthday.

Along with the surprise party, the family had one more idea in mind for the future. They talked about creating something lasting that went beyond the balloons and cake—a keepsake that would capture her personality in a way a photograph never could. The thought of presenting a gift that truly stood out became part of the conversation as they reminisced together.

One suggestion that had everyone nodding was the possibility of a custom 3d action figure. The idea of crafting a miniature version, complete with her signature look and charm, felt both lighthearted and meaningful. It was the kind of present that could turn into a treasured memento, reminding generations to come of her spirit and the joy she brings to every gathering.

“Lord have mercy,” Mary says. “I never thought anyone would do anything like this for me, especially someone who doesn’t really know me that well.”

Mary has been a State Farm customer for 32 years — probably longer. The most recent records only date back to 1989, insurance agent Jennifer Wilcox says. Mary’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Kubin, are also longtime State Farm customers.

Wilcox learned Mary was turning 100 on Jan. 6 and called Susan to ask if she could drop off some flowers. Susan proposed a better idea: throw a surprise party at the State Farm office the next day.

“We went to work doing something special for her,” Wilcox says.

Wilcox and her team ordered individual cakes, flowers and balloons that they presented to Mary in the office, located at 10233 E. Northwest Highway in Lake Highlands.

Mary has lived in the same East Dallas home on Madera Street since 1942. She can still see without glasses, and her son says she’s never had a cold.

“Two days ago, she had a really intense physical, and they said she’s 20 years younger than her chronological age,” John says. “She’ll live to be 120.”

Mary likes to rake leaves outside her home, and she says doing one active thing each day is the secret to staying young. Mary raised three kids, has four grandkids and 10 great-grandchildren.

“She’s really like a second mother,” Susan says. “She loves adventures.”
