The Pietro’s building has been leveled.

The building where Peitro Eustachio raised his family and ran his restaurant for five decades is no more. Pietro’s served its last plate of pasta on Valentine’s Day of 2017, when it closed after 55 years of serving Italian delights on Richmond near Lower Greenville.

Owner Eustachio announced he would sell the property when he found the right tenant for the building, which housed the restaurant downstairs and Eustachio’s family upstairs. Much of the restaurant’s staff was family.

Madison Partners owns the property now, though the company isn’t sure what will go there. “We did the demo to clean up the site because the structure was unsound, and we were having issues with homeless breaking into the building,” says a Madison Partners representative.

Eustachio was a native of Palermo who came to the United States in 1950 and worked for a pizza dough factory. Eventually he started a pizzeria on Lower Greenville near where The Grape is today with his parents, Salvatore and Rosalia and brothers Vince and Joe.

They moved to their Richmond location in 1972, building living quarters above the restaurant, as is common in Europe. Over the years, the restaurant hosted Stanley Marcus, Texas Gov. Bill Clements and many Dallas Cowboys. Read Patti Vinson’s column detailing Pietro’s journey to the United States and development of a neighborhood favorite here.
