The difficult economy is not only hurting adults, it’s also hurting kids, and J.L. Long’s Expectations choir is feeling the pain. The group, which is the top choir at Long Middle School, typically takes a trip to San Antonio each spring to compete in a choir contest and unwind a bit from the long school year. Usually, the group of 39 students raises enough money for the $17,000+ trip (meals, bus ride, hotel, Six Flags admission, etc.) by selling poinsettias, staging car washes, hosting a Cantina Laredo night and sponsoring a silent auction at the group’s dinner theater. Even after all of the work, though, the group is still $4,300 short of its goal. Beverly Regan, a parent and choir booster club member, says any donations would be appreciated. For information about how to help, email Beverly.

In other Long news, the school will be hosting a 75th anniversary party April 2 from 7-9 p.m., featuring an open house and reception, school tours, performances from students (including the Expectations), a presentation on the school’s history and, of course, special guest speakers. The group is looking for old news clippings and Long historical information; contact the school if you have questions or something to contribute.
