The East Dallas-based school will expand to Oak Cliff with a campus at 813 N. Zang Blvd. The property is home to Springhill Montessori, which is closing in May.

Renovations to the building are planned for June and July, with a targeted opening date of Aug. 14.

Leslie Whitmore, who co-founded the school with her husband, Sterling, said construction work will make the classrooms larger and allow each of them to access the outdoors.

The Oak Cliff campus will be able to serve 116 students ages 6 weeks to 6 years old, an increase of about 30 students compared to Springhill Montessori’s capacity, Leslie Whitmore said.

Another person was initially planning to lease the North Zang space, but they backed out, Leslie Whitmore said. The Whitmores then visited the property, and the next day, they signed the lease.

Liberated Montessori was established in 2013 by the Whitmores and was based out of their home in Little Forest Hills. In 2018, facing increasing demand, the Whitmores moved the school to a building on Garland Road, which can serve 88 students in four classrooms. But there’s still a “significant waitlist” for the East Dallas school, Leslie Whitmore said.

The school is one of a few Texas Montessori Nido schools, catering to infants 2 months old to 15 months old, recognized by the Association Montessori International. It is the only school of its kind in Dallas.
