Freak out! The class of 1978 will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a reunion Sept. 25-27. The really important news is that they are inviting ’76, ’77 and ’79 to a Friday Night Fling at 3408 Main St. (a private warehouse in Deep Ellum) at 7 p.m. Sept. 25. Spread the word and bring $12 for the beer, wine and fajita buffet.

Organizing the bash is former Sweetheart of the Week Annettee Silvas DiCario; Monica Hartmann Shaw of the famous family of ’70 and’80s; every guy’s first crush, Roxanne Snyder; Bacchus Club president Jim Echols; quarterback “give ’em Hal” Hammond; Woodrow’s first black male cheerleader, Kenneth Green (sister Jackie, ’76, was first black female cheerleader); supermodel Leigh Hyde Fry; super swimmer Jeff Laceky; Jeanie Dolan Galvin of the Dolan sisters; landed gentry golfer Charlie Secker; and Dr. Lynn Ehrhardt O’Neal, the best-looking cheerleader in J.L. Long history. Call Annettee at 821-8608.

1978: two years beyond Bicentennial. “Animal House” at the Medallion Studio 54 in New York and in Dallas, Flanigan’s. I said freak.

The Doubletree will be the class headquarters as the Tampico was booked for that weekend. Let’s hope the solid gold dancing is not done in the Skyline Room as was another reunion held by Wildcats who predated our rivalry with the Skyline High Institue of Technology Ð usually abbreviated to an acrimonious acronym.

Checking in from the Hotel California will be my sister, Jana Rains Stillwagon, and fellow majorette Kirby Shaw Gomez. They will meet Laura Pearson Classen, now a member of Chicago Ð the city. Back in those disco days, my sister was driving with these two around and around the school, hoping to get a glance of a certain football player my sister liked. She thought he was a “10.”

As they neared the practice field, the deer was caught in the headlights and Jana was so jolly she drove into the chain-link fence. She quickly traded places with Kirby so the intended would not know the extent of her flustered faux pas.

The car she was driving that day was my father’s 1966 Mustang, which he had purchased in 1967. I have been restoring the car to its original silver smoke gray color, with a red Woodrow decal, of course. So it is only fitting that they will be driving the same car to the class picnic at Woodrow Hill on Sept. 27.

I said freak. But not too much.
