It’s the step-by-step repetition of creating the mandala that M Streets artist Terrie Meider finds calming. The kaleidoscopic symbol, thousands of years old, represents unity and wholeness and can be found everywhere from Tibetan meditation to Christian cathedrals. Meider has been both making and teaching the mandala for some time, but she probably never expected that her creations would wind up on T-shirts. That’s what happened, however, when her daughter, Lisa Robison, showed H.D.’s Clothing owner Vicki DeMarco a booklet of the designs and asked how she could market them. “Lisa’s been shopping with me for decades,” DeMarco says, “so I asked, ‘Would you be interested in doing a little business together?’” DeMarco chose four of Meider’s mandalas, and she and her daughter, Michelle, hand-cut and hand-ironed them onto the shirts, then washed them a few times to create a crackled look. It’s the first T-shirt sold under H.D.’s label, and DeMarco notes that Meider’s soothing designs almost contradict her “eclectic and out there” Lower Greenville shop. “We’re trying to get some balance in here,” quips DeMarco’s husband and co-owner, Harry. They were concerned about the hefty price tag — $95-$115 per T-shirt — but they’re selling so quickly that DeMarco is considering a long-sleeve design for the fall.
