Robin Herndon has done more firing than Donald Trump. But she’s no CEO. She’s a fused glass artist who creates designs from pieces of glass and then fires them in a kiln, melting the pieces together. Herndon fashions everything from door accents to sushi dishes in her garage studio, which was part of the master plan when she and her husband designed their home on the shores of White Rock Lake. “We wanted the garage separate from the house so the house won’t burn down in an errant kiln fire,” Herndon says. The set-up works great for laid-back Herndon. “I can run out in my jammies and floppy slippers to check my kiln,” she says. “I’m sometimes out at 1 or 2 in the morning.” Herndon has two kilns in her studio, along with several other power tools. “I’m all about tools,” she says. “I’ll get my husband a power drill for Christmas, and he’s like, ‘Who’s this drill really for? Me or you?’” Herndon started working with glass after her two children were born as a way to relax while still being there for her kids. “Some people knit. Some people read books,” she says. “This is my knitting. This is my book-reading.”
