Neighborhood residents Scott Gleeson and Dane Larsen are working on a public art project called “Las Manos Negras,” which we wrote about in the August Advocate.

The project seeks to tell the stories of undocumented workers in the Dallas area who often are victimized by employers who refuse to pay them, pay them below the minimum wage or require them to work in unsafe conditions. The artists won an Idea Fund grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Gleeson and Larsen open a bilingual exhibit based on the project, titled “Las Manos Negras: Territories” at Gallery 219  at Eastfield College next month. The show runs from Oct. 8-Nov. 2, with a lecture at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The exhibit includes “a collection of texts, graphics and audio which maps the effects of border politics within the spaces of the self, neighborhood and city.”
