It’s iconic simply because it’s the tallest building around here, and as of yesterday, it’s back in local hands once again. An investment group including Lakewood resident Dustin Schilling bought the eight-story (not counting the plaza level) bank building at 6301 Gaston Avenue, along with the a four-story attached building to the west (Texas Neurology is the lead tenant there) and a four-story parking garage across the street. The building, which the Advocate has called home for the past 14 or so years, overlooks Lakewood Country Club, Woodrow Wilson High School and the Lakewood Shopping Village; it’s also a great place to watch the country club’s fireworks each 4th of July, as crowds typically gather on the parking garage roof. The new owner, Caddo Holdings LLC, plans to renovate the two buildings, which were built in 1971 and 1981 but somehow manage to seem older and more dated. Big-time HVAC and cosmetic improvements are planned, Schilling says. Other partners in the buying group are Stacey Davis and Tim Slaughter. For the history-minded, I believe the building was originally built as Lakewood Bank before becoming known, in order over the years, as the Allied Bank Tower, the First Interstate Building and Wells Fargo Bank Building. If you know some more of the bank’s history, let us know about it here.
