One thing you can count on is for Lakewood to rally together when one of our own needs help. The community is already collecting donations after a neighborhood family lost their home in a fire on Sunday afternoon.
The patriarch of the family was home with their pet cat when the fire was reported around 4 p.m. Luckily, he was able to call 911 and safely exit the premise with the family pet. However, two firefighters suffered mild burns while they battled the intensive blaze, which sent flames shooting out of a second-story bedroom, according to a Dallas Morning News article. The matriarch and the couple’s two daughters, who are in seventh and fifth grade at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, were not home during the fire. The cause of the blaze has not yet been established.
The loss at the Bob O Link Drive home was significant. The Red Cross is assisting the family, who are staying with friends temporarily. Friend and neighbor Carrie O’Brien Fisketjon immediately got to work Sunday evening collecting donations of gift cards, clothing and other necessities, which can be dropped off at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 6303 Kenwood. She is also looking for moving boxes and packing material to help the family salvage what they can from the burned wreckage.
