The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at the park Sunday, was attended by Dallas 9 City Council member Paula Blackmon and her appointee to the Dallas Park and Recreation Board, Maria Hasbany, herself a former president of the Lakewood Service League.

“I’m so thrilled to have worked with you guys, bring it full circle,” Hasbany said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful playground.”

Members of the all-women Lakewood Service League raise funds and do service projects throughout the year to support local organizations.

This project coincided with the 40th anniversary of the organization, whose first-ever project also occurred at Lakewood Park.

“I think this is a great example of a public-private partnership that we hope to continue for another 40 years,” former Lakewood Service League president Kathryn Busch said.

In addition to the new playground equipment, the $350,000 project included new park furniture, trash cans, recycling cans and drinking fountains.

“I just want to say thank you for being that passionate advocator and fundraiser and user of our parks,” Blackmon said.

At the ribbon-cutting, there was an ice cream truck, a DJ and a few tents set up with activities for kids.
