Five historic homes in the Lakewood area will open their doors to the public Nov. 4-5 to benefit Lakewood Elementary.

The tour of homes is sponsored by the Lakewood Early Childhood PTA. Last year, the tour earned $35,000 for the school, allowing the purchase of a computer system and playground equipment.

Donna Gainey of the Lakewood Early Childhood PTA predicts a turnout of about 3,500 people this year.

Participants can tour the five homes from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. All five homes are within walking distance of each other.

The tour homes include 6758 Lakewood, 7038 Lakewood, 6934 Tokalon, 7030 Tokalon and 7206 Tokalon.

After the tour, visitors can use their home tour ticket to enter the annual craft fair and Taste of Lakewood, both of which will be held during the day Saturday and Sunday at Lakewood Elementary.

On Friday night, Nov. 3, there is a “Preview Tour and Party”, which will include a tour of the homes followed by a party with silent auction at the Lakewood Country Club, 6430 Gaston, at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the home tour are $6 in advance, $8 the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased at Minyard’s, Lakewood Elementary, or at the homes themselves on tour days. Preview party tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 823-4729. For information, call 320-4888.

Folk Singer’s Show Benefits White Rock Lake

John McCutcheon, a nationally known folk singer from Appalachia, performs a concert to benefit White Rock Lake Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Lake Highlands High School auditorium, 9449 Church.

The concert is organized by For the Love of the Lake, a volunteer committee of Save the Rock, a non-profit organization founded by neighborhood residents to improve the lake and its surrounding park areas.

All concert proceeds benefit lake projects such as recycling, emergency telephones, water fountains and park benches.

McCutcheon is a veteran musician who has played with Paul Simon and Johnny Cash. His latest album won a Grammy nomination for Children’s Album of the Year.

SMU PUTS GRANT MONEY INTO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: SMU’s Inter-Community Experience Program has received a 1995 Campaign for Human Development Grant in the amount of $2,000 from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas. The grant will be used to assist children in the Garrett Park community through tutoring and family-oriented programming. Members of the SMU program take a course in urban studies and tutor neighborhood children. Some of the SMU students involved live in a neighborhood house they built in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity. The purpose of the program is to teach students about inner-city life. LAKEWOOD CARES: The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce has launched its annual Christmas fund-raiser – Lakewood Cares! – to help low-income families in our neighborhood. Bins will be set up at nine area businesses this month for donations. Items needed include clothes, toys, canned goods and furniture. HELPING TO STOP GANGS: The Northeast Operations Division of the Dallas Police Department, which patrols our neighborhood, and a group of neighborhood volunteers kicked-off the Police and Kids Together softball league last month for young gang members. Games are played Thursday nights at 7 p.m. at the Harry Stone Rec Center, 2304 Millmar, through Nov. 30, except for Thanksgiving Day. A meal is served every game. Spectators are invited to watch the games, and slots are open for both players, both adult volunteers and children. For information, call Sgt. P.T. NEIGHBORHOOD TV PRODUCER: Lakewood resident Kendel Johnson has been named executive producer of the Holigan’s Group Ltd, which produces the nationally syndicated television news segments “Your New House” and “About the House”. Johnson spent 10 years with Audience Research & Development.

PHYSICIAN AWARDED: Neighborhood resident Jim Montgomery will be honored Nov. 2 at Texas Christian University’s annual Alumni Awards Dinner as the Frog O’ Fame. Montgomery, who graduated from TCU in 1973, is an orthopedic surgeon. He was the head physician for the 1,200-member 1992 U.S. Olympic Team at the summer games in Barcelona, Spain, and has had other stints as a physician for Olympic athletes. He is married to Nancy and has two daughters, 12-year-old Lacy and 10-year-old Sarah.

A NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVE: Neighborhood resident Bob Booker of DFW Roofing and Repair Services has been appointed neighborhood representative on the Human Service Commission by City Councilman Charlotte Mayes. The commission is a 15-member body that advises the Council about health and human services issues and identifies neighborhood needs.

TERILLI’S CELEBRATES 10 YEARS: Terilli’s, 2815 Greenville, celebrated its 10th anniversary last month. This Italian restaurant and jazz bar held special events throughout October giving customers discounts and commemorative pens. Terilli’s hours are 11 a.m.- 2 a.m. daily.

RAISING MONEY FOR FAMILY PLACE: From Nov. 4-11, shoppers can raise money for the Family Place, a non-profit organization that helps victims of domestic violence, by using the Partners Card to make purchases. Shoppers who use this card receive a 20 percent discount on regularly priced merchandise at more than 200 Dallas-Fort Worth retailers.
