Lakewood Elementary is getting its very own chicken coop. The project, called “The Lakewood Coop,” is already in motion with construction on the campus beginning earlier this month.

The coop will be accompanied by a new outdoor learning gazebo that will be built by Urban Chicken. The project has been funded primarily by the Lakewood Early Childhood Parent-Teacher Association (LECPTA).

The coop cites hands-on learning, “curriculum integration across all subjects” and mental health benefits as a few reasons the project will positively benefit its student population.

“The teachers who had the vision for it made a great case for it,” Lakewood Elementary PTA President Caitlin Maddox said. “It’s definitely going to be a fun addition to the school.”

The teachers behind the vision for the coop are Eryn Davila, Heather Shopoff and Nicole Jones. The three teachers “wished” for the coop as a part of their wishlist process, where the “wishes” that get selected are funded by a handful of Lakewood Elementary’s funding groups such as the Lakewood Elementary PTA and the LECPTA.

Their hope is to have the coop up and running by Oct. although the timeline is subject to change,  according to Maddox.

The Lakewood Coop will be posting updates via Instagram here.
