Lakewood Country Club is hosting the Sectional qualifying to play in this year’s U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, with events that are open to the public starting early this morning.
Play began at 7:00 a.m. off both No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The field will consist of 68 players competing for three spots in the Open. They have a very strong field which includes many from outside our area.
The Golf Channel will be present providing updates throughout the day from qualifying sites around the nation. With the help of member volunteers, hole-by-hole coverage of the afternoon round can be found at www.txga.org and at www.usopen.com, where you will also find information about Lakewood’s qualifying.
Also this morning and afternoon, the Golf Shop opened at 6:00 a.m. and the practice range at 6:20 a.m. Coffee and pastries are available outside the Golf Shop. The Snack Bar will open at 9:00 a.m. and a limited menu of cold sandwiches, snacks and drinks will be available and cash will be accepted. The Men’s Card Room will open at 10:30 a.m., but it’s only for members, players, their families, caddies and the media. A lunch buffet will be served until 2:00 p.m., and the bar will be open throughout the day. The scoreboard grill will be open serving burgers and chicken sandwiches from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and cash will be accepted there as well.
