Out of 100,000 students from Shanghai, one of Lakehill Preparatory School’s juniors, George Cheng, placed second overall in Shanghai Adolescents’ Science and Technology Innovation Contest.
Along with four graduate students and a professor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Cheng and his team created an app that controls everyday appliances at home, like refrigerators, lamps and televisions.
Programmed through the software of Java and Python, the app also tracks energy usage and can send recommendations on how to save energy.
In addition to coming in second overall and receiving four awards, the app drew interest from several companies and universities.
Cheng’s work will not stop there. He says he will continue to develop the app. Beyond that, he has been invited to participate in other competitions to further showcase his technical skills.
The contest was sponsored by the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, more than 12 organizations and over 180 academic societies to find the best in the future of engineering and natural sciences.
