According to co-owner Jesse Moreno Jr., they’re taking their old concept, La Popular Tamale House, a mom-and-pop tamale operation which has been serving Old East Dallas for more than 30 years, and combining it with the Peak & Elm location.

Around this time last year, La Popular Tamale House in Old East Dallas opened a new dining concept at the corner of Peak & Elm. They named it Peak & Elm Cocina Y Bar so they could keep the original sign where the streetcar once ran, and they “restored the building back to its original glory.”

In the next month or so, La Popular will begin operating out of the Peak & Elm location, although they’ll keep the Columbia location open for a couple of months. Eventually though, they will close the La Popular location. For the first time in 33 years, La Popular Tamale House won’t have a Columbia Avenue address.

So what gives?

“Just to be able to give our guests more costumer service,” Moreno explains. “We found ourselves spread thin between three locations (including the Dallas Farmers Market), so just going back to being able to focus on the sole operation instead of having to spread ourselves.”

There won’t be any major changes to the menu, so you can continue to pick up tamales by the dozen. You’ll just have to do it at Peak & Elm instead.
