The owners of clubs Purgatory and Sting are getting close to opening a Middle Eastern restaurant and hookah lounge at 2100 Greenville Ave. The owners are waiting for a certificate of occupancy to open, and expect that could be as soon as mid-September. Co-owner Ata Adriss says Kush will be open for dinner to serve the neighborhood, but he also wants to give late-night partiers a place to unwind and get a good meal, so they’ll serve food until 4 a.m. "There are only so many options for late-night dining," he says.

I peeked in the window today and saw that they’ve chosen oversized, dark wicker furniture with bright orange cushions. And they have a really snazzy sign. Adriss says he wants the place to be relaxing and tropical. "The inside is kind of small, but the patio is really nice," he says.

The space at Greenville and Prospect has been a revolving door of restaurant and bar concepts. Back in the ’90s, I tried tapas there for the first time, and I remember someone telling me that they saw Erykah Badu perform there with a microphone and guitar before she was famous. More recently, it has been a Tex-Mex restaurant called 214, a sports bar called the Side Bar, the tropics-themed Coconuts Bar and Grill and something called the Brown Bar. The owners of Kush appear to be putting a lot into their concept, so I hope it sticks.
