East Dallas resident Kara Walton, is debuting a solo cabaret, “Reused, Renewed, and Rearranged,” at The Sammons Center for the Arts Thursday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m.
Walton, a North Stonewall Terrace resident, is a jazz vocalist and composer.
“This show will heavily showcase my affinity for arranging, which I fell in love with while studying music at the University of North Texas,” Walton said.
In 2022, Walton began working for the Sammons Center for the Arts as their Office and Communications Coordinator.
“We have always committed to showcasing local talent through our Sammons Jazz and Cabaret series,” Joanna St. Angelo, Executive Director of the Sammons Center for the Arts said. “I’m thrilled that the artist selected for this show is local, and she’s already in the building as a member of our team.”
In December 2020, Walton graduated from the University of North Texas College of Music with a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies. All four years Walton sang, toured, and recorded with UNT’s award-winning vocal jazz ensemble, the UNT Jazz Singers.
During her freshman year, she was the first official vocalist of the One O’Clock Lab Band, touring and recording music. She has performed with artists such as Stefan Harris, Sara Gazarek, Josh Nelson, Darmon Meader, Andra Day and Sam Hunt.
During her senior year, Downbeat Magazine named Walton as the winner in the Jazz Arrangement category.
“A good arranger doesn’t just change music for the sake of making it different,” Walton said. A good arranger will take someone else’s song, stretch it to mean something completely new, and do it in a way that sounds like that song could have been written that way originally.”
Walton will perform alongside pianist August Knobbe, bass player Dylan Reid and drummer Stockton Helbing. Tickets are $45 and are available online.
