If you check out J.L. Long Middle School’s spring musical, you’re in for a once-in-a-life-team treat – literally.

The annual productions are original pieces written by David Hirsch, the husband of Beverly Hirsch, the school’s choir teacher.

“I write the musicals as a fun thing for my wife,” David says. “Working with the kids is fun. It’s a way to give back to the kids what I was given.”

This year’s production, “Dreamz,” is David’s sixth musical for Long. The plays are full-length, two-hour, 20-song productions.

“The musicals are kind of a combination of Disney and Monty Python,” David says. “Parents seem to like it. I try to write a show that is entertaining.”

The shows feature as many students as possible and always have a strong moral theme, David says. This year, there were 35 roles to fill.

But David says the success of the plays goes to his wife.

“No matter what I write, if my wife could not get these kids to do it, it wouldn’t work,” he says.

The show will be April 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. at J.L. Long’s auditorium, 6116 Reiger. Tickets are $5 in advance and $5.50 at the door. Call Carol Hensley for tickets at 826-0700.
