Some of the dozens of sick puppies saved by the East Dallas Pet Rescue.

It may not be 101 and they may not all be Dalmatians, but volunteers at the East Dallas Pet Rescue are up to their collective ears after taking in 63 dogs, the bulk of which are puppies, this week.

“We are continuing treatment with eight puppies in hospital care and 12 more receiving treatment for minor conditions like kennel cough and worms,” the shelter posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday. “The treatment of these pups has been expensive and we need your help.”

The dogs came from the Texarakana City Shelter, which was severely overcrowded and under-funded. Most of the puppies did not get proper medical care, and came with a wide range of health conditions that the East Dallas Pet Rescue is struggling to address, with help from the Dallas DogRRR and DFW’s FURgotten Friends. Sadly, four of the puppies were too sick and died shortly after they arrived.

“We are comforted that they spent their last days receiving the best veterinary care and in loving homes,” the shelter shares on Facebook. “Please consider donating in memory of these guys so that we can cover their vet bills and continue to rescue and provide the best treatment for other furry friends in need. Every dollar helps.”

The shelter has set up a GoFundMe page to accept donations toward the sick animals’ care. The page points out that $39 will cover the cost of a life-saving parvo test for a puppy and $60 will cover a veterinary visit. As of Friday afternoon, almost $5,000 of their $8,500 goal has been met.

Donations can also be made directly to the rescue’s vet by phoning Dr. Pipes at Country Brook Animal Hospital, 972-530-3951. Be sure to tell them you are donating on behalf of the East Dallas Pet Rescue.
