Should our neighborhood consider seceding from Dallas Public Schools?

The Rogue’s gallery on Ross Avenue, otherwise known the Dallas Public School Administration Building, has once again soiled the reputation of our school. East Dallas activist and teacher John Fullinwider (who recently was named Teacher of the Year in Dallas Public Schools) said there are two school districts: the real students and teachers working in the trenches, and the surreal situation at DISD headquarters.

Perhaps we should make the division a reality with a ripsaw solution.

Our late mayor, Jack Evans ’41, once mulled such a scenario: The district would be broken up by its subdistricts or high school attendance zones and consolidated with nearby suburban districts for example, Woodrow and Hillcrest would go to the RISD or HPISD.

Since we have often called ourselves the Woodrow or Lakewood Independent School District, perhaps we should take another route. The Texas State Legislature has passed legislation for such a secession action. As I understand it, a certain number of signatures must be obtained and an election called. Voters in both the old district and the proposed district must approve.

While I’m not necessarily a proponent of either of the above ideas, I’d like to put it forth for discussion.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
