Hopefully you’ve had the chance to read our December cover story, which includes family recipes from some high-profile cooks in our neighborhood.

Some of the recipes are easy — we’ve already tried Watel’s World Piece Cafe chef/owner Rene Peeters’s Flemmish beef carbonades, and it was a snap. Urbano Cafe’s Kristen Kauffman’s chocolate meringue pie, on the other hand, takes two days and a mastery of skills to get just right.

If spending any time in the kitchen is not your idea of holiday fun, however, Central Market has an alternative. The store invited its employees to submit family recipes to be included in the store’s offerings this season. The one they chose is from Clay, who works in the Austin North Lamar store. It’s called Mrs. Paschal’s Buttermilk Pie, and it’s unusual because Mrs. Paschal, who is Clay’s grandmother, used cornmeal in the recipe.

The pies are for sale at all Central Market locations, including the one at Greenville and Lovers.
