Earlier this month, the Crawford family narrowly made it out of their burning house. As they work toward normalcy, the family is trying to turn its near-death experience into something positive, especially after being surrounded by the generosity and charity of their neighbors.

The Crawfords did not have properly functioning smoke alarms at the time of the fire, and are now working to make sure other families are better prepared. Their neighbors have put together a block party to raise awareness about fire safety, and will sell T-shirts to raise for money for Guns and Hoses, a North Texas nonprofit that raises money for families of first responders who have died in the line of duty.

Chris Penn, of Good Records and Good Pagoda, will be mixing music during the event. Neighbors will have a chance to meet each other, thank a firefighter and eat.

The Crawfords aren’t asking for money, but hopes neighbors to walk away with important fire safety tips. They want families to have functioning smoke detectors checked by the fire department and a fire escape plan, and want to give back to the firemen who supported them on the tragic night of the fire.

The block party will be Saturday, Oct. 7, from 6-10 p.m. at 9501 Waterview Road. Tickets, which will reserve a t-shirt, can be purchased here.
