The long wait for the completion of the Gus Thomasson Road project just got a little bit longer.
On Friday, District 9 City Councilwoman Paula Blackmon said on Facebook the completion date has been pushed from December 2019 to January 2020.
The delay was caused for several reasons, she said. First, a manufacturer did not deliver colored pavers to the site on time because of a backlog of orders. Second, on Oct. 30, the contractor notified city officials about discrepancies in the design. The comments were sent to the design consultant for clarification, but it took several days for the consultant to review and address them.
Finally, several rainy days and freezing temperatures slowed the project. Even with one day of rain, construction can stop for several days because the ground is too wet to place concrete, Blackmon said.
“As our weather gets colder and we move toward winter, please note that construction delays can occur because of icy and cold weather,” Blackmon said. “I continue to share your frustrations with the delays associated with this project and appreciate your patience.”
Construction on Gus Thomasson began in October 2017 as part of a project to revitalize the Casa View neighborhood. More than two years after construction began, neighbors are frustrated. In May, they placed inflatable ducks in a pool of water that had accumulated in a work zone to draw attention to the unfinished project.
