As with all events in 2020, the Global Village Market at Greenland Hills United Methodist Church is going to look a bit different this year.
The event will kick off Nov. 7-8 with a virtual Global Village Market. Neighbors can donate to their favorite charities or purchase items from select vendors offering online ordering.
Shoppers can pick up their orders or browse other items at a small in-person trunk show in the church parking lot. The outdoor trunk show will be open from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 7 at 5835 Penrose Ave.
Masks and social distancing are required for the adults-only event.
“We usually have live music and free homemade pie,” volunteer Amanda Ritchie said. “We’ve had to scale back quite a bit.”
The church started the annual holiday market in 2007 as a way to counter the consumer-driven Christmas with gifts that give back. For the past 13 years, the annual holiday market has benefitted dozens of charities and raised nearly $393,000.
“We had a Zoom call with vendors, and a lot of them said they make the majority of their revenue between October and December at holiday markets,” Ritchie said. “A lot of those markets were canceled this year, so they were thankful we were trying to do something to help them.”
Some of the 26 participating nonprofits include Mommies in Need, which provides childcare to moms experiencing a health crisis, and Threads of Hope, which teaches disadvantaged women to create artisan handwork.
