When Justine Yeager began poetry readings two years ago in her East Dallas gallery, she wasn’t sure how they would go.

But they have been successful, with regulars coming from as far away as Fort Worth, she says.

“When you plan something like this, you never know,” Yeager says. “There’s a lot of energy out trying to establish places like this.”

Yeager, a native East Dallas and Lakewood resident, works to establish more recognition and outlets for writers’ creativity. In addition to hosting the monthly poetry readings at her gallery, Justine Milam Gallery, she displays literature by local writers. Her gallery is at 5224 Milam Street.

“Ninety-nin percent of them are as good at reading as they are at writing,” Yeager says. “It really moves people. It really is a neat experience.”

The gallery seats about 40 people and the readings are casual, with refreshments provided. The shows are usually the third Thursday of the month and are free.

At 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18, and all-women expedition highlighting Laura Cain is scheduled. Cain wrote the poetry book Radio Daze. A donation of non-perishable food for the Family Place, a women’s shelter, is requested.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16, James Mardis and Friends will perform. Mardis is the author of Southern Tongue and Hang Time. There will be a door charge of a toy, which will be donated to the Disciple of Trinity to be given to children benefiting from the organization’s HOSPICE program.
